A Brief History

About Us

The present Society was re-formed in February, 1998 through the efforts of Ed Dickinson who at the time was archaeologist for North East Lincs Council.

The Society took the place of the former Grimsby Archaeological Society which had ceased to meet in the mid-1970’s.

The Society was named the North East Lincolnshire Archaeology and Local History Society, with its early meetings being held in the Doughty Centre and later the Central Library in Grimsby.

Early years of the Society saw it mainly involved in North East Lincolnshire but over the years has extended its activities throughout northern Lincolnshire, working very closely with a number of Universities and societies.

As the Society’s sphere of interest widened we felt that the society’s name did not fairly represent what it stood for, and in 2023 the AGM agreed to change the name to the Northern Lincolnshire Archaeology and History Society.

Our Society, now in its twenty fifth year, continues to pursue an ever-increasing role in the understanding of our historically important area, and provides the opportunity for anyone to join and explore and advance their knowledge.

Membership is open to all - and we look forward to welcoming you at our regular events and talks.
