Committee
Our Constitution, revised in 2023, states that the Society’s Committee will be made up of a Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer, and up to five other members. The role of Secretary is currently shared between our Minutes Secretary, and our Communications Officer.
Additionally, we have a Membership Officer. Members can be co-opted during the year to fill vacancies.
Committee Meetings take place every two months throughout the year, and election to the Committee is open to all members of the Society. Current Committee members are David, Cath, Mike, Anne, Barbara, Jan, Peter and Marion.
Roles and Responsibilities
Chair
David’s role as Chair is to set the direction of the Society and do all he can to ensure that the Society thrives. The Chair must ensure the Constitution is complied with and set the agenda for and chair Committee meetings.
Our Chair also takes the lead in providing speakers for our monthly meeting and identifying possible dig sites.
Vice-Chair
The role of the Vice-Chair’s is to support the Chair, and act as a sounding board for ideas and concerns.
Cath, the current Vice-Chair, also helps with reviewing the website, and can usually be found serving Refreshments during our Open Meetings!
Treasurer
Our treasurer Mike is required to produce financial updates at each Committee meeting, and a yearly statement of accounts at the Annual General Meeting. He’s the man who arranges the insurance and pays the bills!
Mike is also well known to members as our Society photographer and audio-visual expert.
Minutes Secretary
Barbara produces and retains the formal minutes of all Committee Meetings, Annual General Meetings and Extraordinary General Meetings.
Communications Officer
Anne deals with all communications to and from prospective
members, current members and other historical and archaeological societies. She also helps with reviewing the website and it's content.
Membership Officer
Jan is our Membership Officer, keeping track of our membership details.
She also keeps in touch with members who are not online and enjoys meeting and greeting members and visitors arriving for the Society's Open Evenings.
Marion specialises in keeping us in touch with other local societies, and like Jan takes pleasure in meeting and greeting members and visitors arriving for the Society's Open Meetings.
Peter says of his role on the Committee:
I tend to help where I can with anything, including technical support at lectures, helping organise exhibitions and carrying out publicity work. I have also acted as Site Director at some of our digs.
