Grimsby Minster

The Society held an exhibition at Grimsby Minster focussing on the ecclesiastical glass found at the excavations at Our Big Picture in Bethlehem St Grimsby in 2023 and 2024.

It is believed that the glass could originally have come from either St James’ or St Mary’s church during the 14th or 15th century during renovations.

A team of Society members planned and organised the exhibition in the Minster as part of a Heritage Day held at the Minster with other groups exhibiting on the day as well.

The event was well attended, with many members of the public taking a great interest in our finds, asking a variety of questions.

The glass is delicate and estimated to be around 700 years old, so it could only be viewed in the display cabinets we set up.

To complement the cabinets, we also had our display boards set up with enlarged photographs and drawings of the various pieces of glass enabling a clear view of the detail on some of the glass.

A screen centred above our display tables ran a continuous programme illustrating the excavation work we carried out to unearth the many finds at Our Big Picture, during the two digs, including the special glass on display.

All in all, an excellent day, giving the Society an opportunity to show the public some of the archaeology and history of our town.
